MicroRNAs in immune response and macrophage polarization.
Inflammation is essential to combat invading microbial pathogens. In this process, the involvement of multiple immune cell populations is crucial in mounting an optimum immune response. In the past decade, a new class of noncoding small RNAs, called microRNAs (miRNAs), has emerged as important regulators in biological processes. The important role of miRNAs in inflammation and immune response i...
متن کاملCommon Macrophage Signatures for Immune Suppression
Background: The overall thematic goal of this ARC is to define signaling mechanisms engaged by infectious agents and/or host homeostasis systems that limit immune response. This specific ARC project (project 1) is designed to explore the role of the macrophage in activation and inhibition that lead to deficient immunes response to distinct pathogens. This will be achieved by bringing together f...
متن کاملTumor-induced immune dysfunction: the macrophage connection.
Although macrophages (Mphis) mediate tumor cytotoxicity, display tumor-associated antigens, and stimulate antitumor lymphocytes, cancer cells routinely circumvent these host-mediated immune activities, rendering the host incapable of mounting a successful antitumor immune response. Evidence supporting a direct causal relationship between cancer and immune dysfunction suggests that the presence ...
متن کاملModulation of macrophage immune responses by Echinacea.
Echinacea preparations are widely used herbal medicines for the prevention and treatment of colds and minor infections. There is little evidence for the individual components in Echinacea that contribute to immune regulatory activity. Activity of an ethanolic Echinacea extract and several constituents, including cichoric acid, have been examined using three in vitro measures of macrophage immun...
متن کاملIgE and immune complex glomerulonephritis.
A case is presented of immune complex proliferative glomerulonephritis associated with peripheral eosinophilia, renal deposits of IgE, and eosinophils in glomeruli and interstitial tissue. Two sequential renal specimens are described. This study also reviews prior reports of IgE in glomerulonephritis and discusses possible explanations for the presence of IgE.
